Sourp Magar Armenian Monastery Ruins

Atmospheric 11th-century Armenian monastery of St. Macarius hidden deep within pine-forested mountain ravines.

Sourp Magar (Saint Macarius) is the sole historical Armenian monastery on the island. Founded around 1000 AD by Coptic monks and ceded to the Armenian Church in the 15th century, it was a major spiritual and pilgrimage refuge.

Hidden within an enchanted valley at 530m on the northern slopes of the Kyrenia range, the atmospheric stone ruins, cloister arches, and ancient plane trees overlook the northern sea through fragrant pines.

Tips before you go

  • Reached via a well-graded forestry track leading from the Alevkaya forestry station.
  • Wear practical walking boots to safely explore the historic stone courtyard.
  • A natural cold freshwater spring bubbles beneath ancient plane trees on site.

How to get there

3 km northeast of Alevkaya forestry station via signposted unpaved forestry track.
