Buffavento Castle Mountain Summit

Cyprus's highest and most inaccessible fortress at 950m, aptly named 'Defier of the Winds'.

Perched dramatically at 950 meters altitude on a jagged limestone pinnacle, Buffavento ('Defier of the Winds') is the highest castle on Cyprus. Built during the Byzantine era as a signal beacon and refuge, it later served the Lusignans as a high-security prison.

A rigorous 40-minute hike ascending hundreds of mountain stone steps leads to the upper ward, rewarding climbers with an astonishing bird's-eye view stretching across the Mesaoria plain and the northern coast.

Tips before you go

  • Carry at least 1 liter of drinking water per person as there are zero facilities at the ruins.
  • Wear supportive hiking shoes with good tread for the uneven, steep stone steps.
  • Winds on the upper battlements are fiercely strong; secure hats and cameras.

How to get there

Drive to the Besparmak mountain pass between Nicosia and Kyrenia, following signs onto the narrow access road.
