Venetian Walls & Famagusta Gate

16th-century Renaissance star fortifications and the restored vaulted Porta Giuliana cultural pavilion.

A monumental military architecture triumph built by the Republic of Venice in 1567. The historic city is encircled by an intact 4.5 km circuit with 11 triangular spearhead bastions forming an eleven-pointed star.

Famagusta Gate (Porta Giuliana) was the principal ceremonial entrance. Today, its vaulted brick passageway and central dome serve as Nicosia's municipal cultural hall.

Tips before you go

  • Walk atop the Karaffa Bastion to see the geometric angles of the historic moat.
  • Enjoy rotating contemporary art exhibitions housed inside the arched tunnel.
  • Dramatically lit after sundown.
