Famagusta Gate (Porta Giuliani)

Monumental 1567 Venetian gatehouse cutting through the fortifications with a vaulted subterranean gallery.

Originally named Porta Giuliani after the Venetian military architect Giulio Savorgnano who engineered Nicosia's circular walls in 1567, Famagusta Gate was the most fortified entry point to the capital.

The passageway consists of an imposing barrel-vaulted stone tunnel illuminated by an elegant central skylight cupola. Painstakingly restored, it now serves as Nicosia's municipal cultural venue hosting art retrospectives and acoustic concerts.

Tips before you go

  • Inspect the historic bronze cannons positioned near the outer defensive moat.
  • Stroll onto Caraffa Bastion directly above the gatehouse for panoramic views along the ramparts.
  • Frequently hosts contemporary art exhibitions with complimentary admission.

How to get there

Located along Athinon Avenue on the eastern arc of Nicosia's Venetian fortifications.
