Stavros tou Agiasmati Church (UNESCO)

Remote 1494 steep-pitched timber-roof UNESCO chapel set in deep pine forest, painted by master Philip Goul.

Stavros tou Agiasmati ('Holy Cross of the Spring') is secluded amidst dense pine forests 5 km outside Platanistasa village. It represents a crowning monument of the UNESCO-inscribed painted churches of Troodos.

Built in 1494, its entire interior was illuminated by the celebrated painter Philip Goul, representing the most complete and masterly collection of late-15th-century post-Byzantine murals surviving on Cyprus.

Tips before you go

  • The key is kept by the custodian in Platanistasa village (+357 99 514179); call before driving up.
  • Look for the exceptionally detailed donor portraits and the Passion of Christ.
  • Beautiful peaceful forest drive through the Pitsilia mountains.

How to get there

Drive 5 km northwest of Platanistasa village along a paved mountain forest road.
