Karpaz Wild Donkey Reserve

Protected national park where hundreds of iconic free-roaming wild donkeys greet travelers along coastal lanes.

The Karpaz National Park shelters the island's famous population of free-roaming feral Cypriot donkeys. Descendants of working farm animals left behind in 1974, they have thrived in the remote wilderness under international conservation protection.

Hundreds of docile, curious donkeys wander freely across the scrub hills and frequently stand along the paved road, peering gently into car windows waiting for an offering of carrots or crisp apples.

Tips before you go

  • Stock up on carrots or apples in Dipkarpaz village before entering the reserve gate.
  • The donkeys are gentle and relish being stroked and hand-fed by children.
  • Drive with care as animals often gather directly in the roadway around blind turns.

How to get there

Along the main paved road stretching east of Dipkarpaz towards Apostolos Andreas Monastery.
