Agios Philon Basilica Ruins & Cove (Ancient Karpasia)

Atmospheric 12th-century Byzantine church and 5th-century basilica mosaics overlooking a turquoise sandy cove on the Karpaz Peninsula.

Perched on a coastal bluff above the ancient harbor of Karpasia, Agios Philon features the evocative vaulted ruins of a 12th-century Byzantine church built atop a 5th-century early Christian basilica with polychrome opus sectile marble floors.

Right below the cliff lies a crystal-clear sandy swimming bay sheltered by the submerged stones of an ancient Roman mole.

Tips before you go

  • Look for the geometric marble floor inlays and marble columns of the 5th-century baptistery.
  • Bring swimwear to float in the sheltered turquoise bay right below the church.
  • Unforgettable sunset views across the northern sea.

How to get there

5 km north of Rizokarpaso (Dipkarpaz) on the northern coast of the Karpaz Peninsula.
