Kantara Castle Clifftop Fortress

Easternmost Byzantine mountain castle perched at 630m, offering simultaneous panoramas of northern and southern seas.

Kantara Castle (from the Arabic for 'bridge' or 'arch') guards the eastern approaches of the Kyrenia mountain range at 630 meters elevation. Originally fortified by the Byzantines in the 10th century, it was later refortified by the Lusignans.

From its airy summit battlements, visitors enjoy an unmatched twin-coast panorama: the northern Mediterranean shoreline to the left, Famagusta Bay to the right, and the endless spine of the Karpaz Peninsula stretching east.

Tips before you go

  • Wear grippy sneakers or hiking shoes for the stone steps along the cliff edges.
  • Walk to the northeasternmost watchtower for uninterrupted 360-degree photography.
  • A small rustic cafe operates in Kantara village below the entrance.

How to get there

Accessible via scenic mountain roads from Iskele or Tatlisu ascending towards Kantara village.
