Martinengo Venetian Bastion (Famagusta Walled City)

Masterpiece of 16th-century Venetian Renaissance military engineering with 6-meter-thick ramparts and sweeping city views.

Designed by Venetian military architect Michele Sanmicheli and completed in 1562 at the northwestern corner of Famagusta's ramparts, the Martinengo Bastion is one of the finest surviving examples of Renaissance artillery fortification in the Mediterranean.

Visitors can walk through its vast vaulted casemates with wide horse ramps and climb to the upper parapet overlooking the rock-cut moat and medieval skyline.

Tips before you go

  • Explore the cavernous interior galleries engineered with smoke-ventilation shafts for Venetian cannons.
  • The upper terrace offers the widest panoramic view over Walled Famagusta.
  • Free admission with easy parking right beside the inner ramp.
