Varosha Ghost City Walkway

Famous mid-century resort district frozen in time since 1974, now opened for pedestrian and bicycle exploration.

Prior to 1974, Varosha was Cyprus's premier glamorous international resort, welcoming icons like Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor. Following the 1974 conflict, the district was sealed behind military fences for nearly half a century, becoming the world's most famous modern ghost town.

Since late 2020, designated boulevards and the pristine golden shoreline have been opened for civilian walking and cycling. The sight of towering mid-century hotels slowly reclaimed by nature creates a hauntingly unique historical encounter.

Tips before you go

  • Rent a bicycle at the checkpoint entrance to cover the extensive paved exploration loop.
  • Bring your passport/ID for entry at the security checkpoint.
  • Do not attempt to cross safety ropes or enter damaged building interiors.

How to get there

Access via the southern checkpoint of Famagusta near Dr. Fazil Kucuk stadium.
