Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (St. Nicholas Cathedral)

Sublime 14th-century Rayonnant Gothic coronation cathedral of the Lusignan Kings of Jerusalem, now a mosque.

Formerly the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, this is one of the crowning achievements of French Rayonnant Gothic architecture in the Levant, often dubbed the 'Reims of the East'. It was here that the Lusignan monarchs received the crown of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Converted into a mosque in 1571, its soaring stone arches, rose window, and flying buttresses remain impeccably preserved. Standing in the square before the west portal is an extraordinary historic fig tree (Ficus sycomorus) planted in 1299 when construction commenced.

Tips before you go

  • Remove footwear before stepping onto the carpeted interior; scarves provided for women.
  • Admire the ancient 1299 sycamore fig tree flourishing before the western façade.
  • The bustling pedestrian square offers excellent Turkish coffee and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice.

How to get there

Located on Namık Kemal Square in the center of the walled city of Famagusta.
