Ancient Salamis (Gymnasium & Amphitheatre)

Sprawling classical metropolis showcasing soaring marble colonnades, Roman baths, and a 15,000-seat amphitheater by the sea.

Salamis was the greatest ancient capital of Cyprus, traditionally founded around 1100 BC by the Trojan War hero Teucer. For over a millennium, it reigned as the island's primary commercial and cultural powerhouse.

The extensive archaeological park features an imposing gymnasium flanked by marble Corinthian columns, grand Roman thermal baths with intact mosaics, a monumental amphitheater, and early basilicas set against coastal sand dunes.

Tips before you go

  • The site spans vast acreage; plan for at least 2 to 3 hours of leisurely walking.
  • Bring swimwear to take a dip on the quiet sandy beach bordering the ancient ruins.
  • Sun protection and drinking water are essential during warmer months.
