Vouni Palace Clifftop Ruins

5th-century BC Persian royal palace perched dramatically on a 250m sheer cliff overlooking Petra tou Limniti.

Vouni Palace is among the most dramatically sited archaeological complexes in the Mediterranean. Erected around 500 BC by the pro-Persian king of Marion to monitor rebellious Greek Soli, it crowns a 250-meter-high cliff dropping sheer into the sea.

The sprawling royal compound numbered 137 rooms across three terraced levels, complete with royal baths, cisterns, and a Temple of Athena at its summit. Below lies Petra tou Limniti, one of Cyprus's earliest Neolithic offshore sites.

Tips before you go

  • Exposed to sea winds at 250m elevation; a light windbreaker is helpful.
  • Walk up to the ruins of the Temple of Athena at the highest point of the rocky terrace.
  • Unsurpassed panoramic vistas of the western coastline and sunset.

How to get there

Follow the paved winding mountain road climbing 5 km west of Ancient Soli to the top of Vouni headland.
