Panagia tou Moutoulla Church (UNESCO)

Oldest dated steep-pitched timber-roof church on Cyprus (1280) featuring 13th-century Crusader-era frescoes.

Panagia tou Moutoulla is the earliest accurately dated timber-roof church in the Troodos mountain range, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. A dedicatory inscription confirms the chapel and frescoes date to 1280, commissioned by John of Moutoullas and his wife Irene.

The intimate stone interior preserves rare 13th-century wall paintings reflecting the unique cultural cross-pollination between Byzantine traditions and Crusader Frankish art.

Tips before you go

  • Spot the donor portraits of John and Irene holding a model of the church.
  • Moutoullas is famous for hand-carved wooden bread basins (skafes).
  • Drink fresh sparkling mineral spring water flowing naturally through the village.

How to get there

In Moutoullas village; follow the stepped stone path climbing the hill above the central street.
