Kykkos Monastery

Cyprus's wealthiest and most celebrated imperial monastery, with golden mosaics and an icon attributed to Apostle Luke.

Founded in the late 11th century by Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos at 1,318 meters elevation. It enshrines one of the legendary icons of the Virgin Mary attributed to Saint Luke.

Every cloister arcade and covered corridor glows with intricate gold-leaf mosaics. The on-site treasury museum displays an extraordinary assembly of early Christian art, chalices, and illuminated codices.

Tips before you go

  • The museum ticket (€5) is worth every cent for its world-class ecclesiastical collection.
  • Drive 2 km further up to the Throni peak to see the tomb of Archbishop Makarios III.
  • Buy monastery-produced Commandaria and herbal liqueurs in the cloister shop.
