Panagia Angeloktisti Church (Kiti)

11th-century Byzantine church housing a rare 6th-century pre-iconoclastic mosaic of the Virgin Mary.

The church's name translates to 'Built by Angels', as legend tells that celestial angels descended by night to raise the sanctuary walls.

Inside the apse survives an extraordinary 6th-century mosaic depicting the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ between the archangels Michael and Gabriel—one of the world's crowning examples of early Christian pre-iconoclastic art.

Tips before you go

  • Look closely at the golden mosaic tesserae in the central apse.
  • Admire the ancient protected terebinth tree in the churchyard, centuries old.
  • The village square of Kiti offers peaceful traditional bakeries and cafes.

How to get there

11 km southwest of Larnaca center via the B4 road towards Larnaca Airport and Kiti village.
