Church of Saint Lazarus

9th-century Byzantine stone basilica housing the crypt tomb of Saint Lazarus and an ornate baroque iconostasis.

The spiritual heart of historic Larnaca. According to Orthodox tradition, Lazarus lived in Cyprus for 30 years after his resurrection, serving as the first bishop of Kition.

Beneath the sanctuary lies the subterranean crypt with the stone tomb. The interior is crowned by an extraordinary 18th-century gilded wooden icon screen featuring 120 icons.

Tips before you go

  • Descend into the crypt below the chancel to view the ancient sarcophagus.
  • Sip traditional Cypriot coffee at the relaxed stone-paved square outside.
  • Modest dress required (wraps provided at the entrance).
