Ancient City of Tamassos & Royal Tombs

Fabled Homeric copper city-kingdom featuring remarkable 6th-century BC stone underground royal burial chambers.

Tamassos was one of the wealthiest ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus, referenced in Homer's Odyssey as a primary center of copper commerce. Archaeological excavations near Politiko village reveal its copper smelting furnaces and civic sanctuaries.

The crown jewel of the site comprises two monumental 6th-century BC Archaic Royal Tombs with subterranean stone burial chambers skillfully carved to mimic wooden timber gables and pediments.

Tips before you go

  • Descend the stone steps inside the subterranean royal chambers to observe the architectural carvings.
  • Ancient copper slag heaps and metallurgical installations are visible across the site.
  • Located just 500 meters from the historic Convent of Saint Herakleidios.

How to get there
