Royal Chapel of the Lusignans (Pyrga)

Rare 1421 Frankish Gothic chapel featuring wall paintings of Crusader King Janus and Queen Charlotte de Bourbon.

The Royal Chapel in Pyrga is a remarkably preserved relic of the Lusignan Kingdom of Cyprus. Built in 1421, it originally formed part of an extensive royal estate belonging to the Frankish monarchs.

The chapel's walls are adorned with rare Franco-Byzantine frescoes depicting King Janus and his queen Charlotte kneeling before the Crucifixion, accompanied by historic French inscriptions and royal heraldic coats of arms.

Tips before you go

  • Inspect the Old French inscriptions painted beneath the religious murals.
  • Key is held on-site by the Department of Antiquities custodian.
  • Village of Pyrga also retains ruins of medieval hydraulic works.
