Stavrovouni Monastery

Oldest monastery in Cyprus founded in 327 AD by Saint Helena atop a 668m solitary peak housing a relic of the True Cross.

Crowning a dramatic pyramid-shaped peak visible from across the island, Stavrovouni is steeped in early Christian heritage.

Following strict Athonite monastic rules, entry to the inner monastery is restricted to men only. However, the outer terraces and the Chapel of All Saints are open to all, offering unmatched 360-degree vistas.

Tips before you go

  • Note: Inner monastery admits male visitors only (strict dress code, no shorts).
  • Female visitors can enjoy the spectacular outer viewpoint and the adjacent chapel.
  • The panoramic views over the sea and mountain foothills are among the island's best.

How to get there

Off the A1 highway between Limassol and Nicosia, follow the well-marked road to the mountain summit.
