Ancient Lambousa & Rock-Cut Roman Fish Tanks

Historic city-kingdom featuring remarkable sea-carved Roman fish breeding tanks and coastal Phoenician tombs.

Lambousa ('The Radiant') was the coastal successor to the ancient Phoenician city of Lapethos. It achieved great prosperity under Roman and Byzantine rule, yielding the legendary 6th-century Lambousa Byzantine silver treasure.

Its most striking maritime relics are the ingenious Roman fish tanks (vivaria) carved directly into the shore limestone shelf, engineered with sluices and flushing channels to circulate seawater. Today they serve as crystal-clear natural swimming and snorkeling pools.

Tips before you go

  • Bring a mask and snorkel to float inside the ancient rock-cut Roman seawater basins.
  • Inspect the rock-cut Phoenician tombs and church ruins scattered along the coastline.
  • Beautiful evening sunset views over the northern sea.

How to get there

12 km west of Kyrenia in the Lapithos (Lapta) coastal area near the historic Lambousa headland.
