Saint Hilarion Castle

Fairytale clifftop Crusader fortress clinging to a 732m crag above Kyrenia, said to inspire Disney's Snow White castle.

Cyprus's most dramatic stronghold, perched dramatically across the jagged crests of the Kyrenia mountain range. Built by Byzantines and expanded by French Lusignans.

The citadel is structured across three defensive tiers. The summit level rewards climbers with the Queen's Window: an ornate Gothic traceried stone frame overlooking the Mediterranean.

Tips before you go

  • Sturdy trainers are essential for ascending the roughly 500 uneven stone steps to the summit.
  • Bring a water bottle as amenities are only available at the lower entrance gate.
  • The Queen's Window framing the coastline makes an unforgettable photograph.

How to get there

15 minutes south of Kyrenia via the mountain pass road. Requires North Cyprus car insurance at the border.
