Akrotiri Salt Lake & Flamingos

Vast coastal salt lagoon hosting thousands of overwintering greater flamingos from November to March.

Covering over 10 square kilometers, this is the largest natural aquatic body in Cyprus. In hot summer months it dries into a shimmering white salt flat resembling an extraterrestrial desert.

Winter rains transform the basin into a teeming sanctuary for 10,000+ greater flamingos feeding on brine shrimp, alongside migrating cranes, herons, and stilts.

Tips before you go

  • Bring binoculars or a telephoto zoom lens as the birds stay well out toward the center.
  • Best viewing blinds are located near the Akrotiri Environmental Center.
  • Never drive off-road onto the salt crust: vehicles easily sink into hidden deep mud.

How to get there

10 km south of Limassol center via Zakaki or along the Lady's Mile beach road.
