Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas of the Cats

Historic 4th-century convent on the Akrotiri Peninsula famous as a sanctuary for dozens of resident cats.

Founded in the 4th century by Saint Helena, this tranquil monastery is steeped in the legend of hundreds of cats brought to Cape Gata ('Cape of the Cats') to rid the peninsula of venomous snakes during a long drought.

Today the peaceful courtyard gardens are home to dozens of affectionate cats cared for by the resident nuns.

Tips before you go

  • Visitors often bring cat food donations to support the convent's feline sanctuary.
  • Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) is required inside the church.
  • Respect the quiet atmosphere of the working convent.

How to get there

Located on the Akrotiri Peninsula southwest of Limassol, just past the Akrotiri Salt Lake.
