Panagia Chrysopolitissa & St. Paul's Pillar

Grand 4th-century basilica ruins sheltering the historic marble pillar where Saint Paul was flogged before converting Cyprus.

A pivotal site of early Christian history in Kato Paphos. In 45 AD, Saints Paul and Barnabas converted Roman Proconsul Sergius Paulus, making Cyprus the first Roman province governed by a Christian.

According to tradition, Paul received 39 lashes while tied to the white marble column preserved on the site. Surrounding it are the sprawling ruins of the island's largest 4th-century seven-aisled basilica with magnificent floor mosaics.

Tips before you go

  • Walk along the raised timber walkways crossing directly over ancient mosaic floors.
  • Locate the revered marble column of Saint Paul in the northwest corner.
  • The active stone church of Agia Kyriaki hosts ecumenical Anglican and Catholic services.

How to get there

Kato Paphos, 400 meters inland from the harbor basin, easy walk from the promenade.
