Ancient Amathus

Ruins of an ancient royal city-kingdom featuring the hilltop Temple of Aphrodite overlooking the Mediterranean.

One of the legendary ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus dating back over 3,000 years. The site encompasses the lower agora with Corinthian marble columns and the high acropolis.

From the top of the hill, panoramic vistas stretch across the Limassol coastline. Offshore, remnants of the ancient submerged stone harbour can be spotted while snorkeling.

Tips before you go

  • Climb to the acropolis for commanding views over the bay.
  • Carry water and sunscreen as there is no shade on the trails.
  • Snorkelers can spot the sunken ancient harbour blocks just offshore.

How to get there

East of Limassol along Amathountos Avenue. Bus 30 terminates nearby.
