Early Christian Basilicas of Cape Agios Georgios

Excavations of a 6th-century pilgrimage port featuring intricate mosaic floors, a baptistery, and cliffside tombs.

During early Byzantine times, this windswept cape was an important maritime hub for pilgrims sailing between Constantinople and Alexandria. Excavations have revealed three grand 6th-century basilicas.

The central basilica retains vivid animal and geometric mosaics depicting stags, doves, and marine life. To the south, Roman rock-cut tombs puncture the cliff faces overlooking the surf.

Tips before you go

  • Inspect the rare circular stone baptistery floor mosaics.
  • Follow the path toward the coastal rocks to examine multi-chamber Roman tombs.
  • Combine with a sunset drink at St. George harbor just below.
