Paphos Gate & Holy Cross Catholic Church

Historic western bastion gateway and Franciscan sanctuary uniquely straddling the UN Buffer Zone.

Paphos Gate (Porta San Domenico) stood as the western portal out of medieval Nicosia. Immediately adjacent rises the Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, established by the Franciscan Custody in 1900.

The church occupies a poignant position: its rear wall literally forms part of the UN Buffer Zone (Green Line). Inside, peaceful classical arches shelter a diverse international parish with a vibrant pipe organ.

Tips before you go

  • Multi-lingual masses are celebrated throughout the week in English, Spanish, and French.
  • Step outside to view the United Nations observation post on the wall line.
  • Just a few minutes walk to the modern Eleftheria Square designed by Zaha Hadid.

How to get there

Situated at the western edge of the old city walls near Markos Drakos Avenue.
